So, I expect you woke up on the 1st January, still jaded from Christmas and possibly a little hung over and realised you hadn’t yet worked out what your resolutions should be for 2016.
Lose weight? Change jobs? Career advancement? Get Fit? Dream holiday? Be a better parent? Give up alcohol? Spend more time with you partner? Change your life? Need I go on?
I’ve stopped putting this pressure on myself. Why? Because it doesn’t work. In the desperate attempt to come up with something meaningful I end up setting the same resolutions, for me usually losing weight and it misses the point.
If we truly want to achieve something – intention needs to be added to the list of ingredients. By that I mean that the genuine intent or desire to achieve the goal exists. It’s worth grabbing pen and paper and brainstorming the reasons you want to achieve the goal and the actions you need to take. Here’s mine.
“I will be able to run up 38 steps (they’re on my dog walk) without feeling breathless by the end of February”
I want to achieve this because:
- I will lose a little weight
- I will feel better
- I will look better
- My skin will improve
My actions:
- Snack less and choose healthy alternatives
- Attempt to run them every day for 2 months
- Attend minimum 2 exercise classes a week
Pop those intentions and reasons onto a post it and keep it with you where you can see them daily. The intent will be there.
Good luck and I’d love to hear what those intentions look like, please comment below.
