We’ve all heard about death by PowerPoint and I’ve seen it in action – it’s not pretty, yet often it’s not PowerPoint at fault but more about how its used. Creating visual impact is crucial when delivering a presentation so here’s my top 8 tips on how to make the most of yours.
- Don’t reply on PowerPoint to get you through your presentations. Words should be kept to a minimum on screen – they’re there for your audience to take key points home, you’re there to deliver the message. Too many words puts the focus on the presentation not the presenter.
- If you use images – give them impact and fill the screen with them. Your audience will take information in – in a variety or ways. Visual, auditory etc
- Give your audience something to do, a simple exercise, a question to think about. Maybe a discussion topic.
- Don’t over automate. Flashing words and ones that move around the screen are distracting – the focus should be on you.
- Look at your audience not your screen – this is back to knowing your presentation and topic inside out.
- Think outside of the box for visuals. I’ve seen magic tricks done and role plays – maybe get the audience involved – anything to make it memorable.
- Don’t step in front of the projector, using a USB pointer allows you to change slides from a distance or turn the screen black if you need to walk across in front of it – there’s nothing worse than having your presentation emblazoned across your top.
- Experiment with other slide show formats. Prezzi is a good one, however it tends to be a bit whizzy and there is nothing wrong with PowerPoint – it’s how its used that matters.
