I’ve loved experimenting with this. The robin is sketched onto the fabric from a photograph I took during my year on the Caldon Canal – a photographic project where I took photos on my morning dog walk along my home stretch of the Caldon Canal., approximately a two mile stretch between Leek and Denford. More about this project can be found on Instagram @livelifecolour or using the #yearonthecaldoncanal hashtag
Robins have been my favourite birds since I was very little. Their characteritic red breast and strong stance make them pretty special.
Previously I’ve always used varigated threads, but here I’ve done my own colour mixing, hand blending colours and using long and short stitch to enhance the effect.
The second Robin has been stitched onto a background cyanotype. The trees were printed using a hand made negative – a photo taken in the wood at Ladderedge Country Park – just a 5 minute walk from home – a perfect lockdown project.
Yet to be mounted or framed, I’ve not decided yet so if you’re interested in this little chappie or his pal above, email me at carolyntrafford@gmail.com or call 07714 216388
