I’ve always baked, made and at my worst (or best) recycled wrapping paper.  I was raised to be economical and not wasteful.  I relaxed a little through the height of my career, time was in short supply and my purse was a little fuller.  Self employment reversed that trend a little and I’ve really enjoyed having the time to make again (except this time I’m making a career out of my creativity).

We’ve seen a revival in the make, do and mend mindset, the economy is hitting pockets hard, but also this year there’s been a real surge in folks catching up with the fact that our throwaway society can not continue.

Kirsty Allsopp (love her or hate her) wasn’t original in her idea about a handmade Christmas and I don’t agree with some of it.  I remember seeing her spend a 3 figure sum to go and blow her own glass baubles in the first series, and in true commercial style she now sells her own craft range on the back of her success.

There are lots of sites (see below) explaining why and how you should go handmade – but here’s my top 5:

  • People really do appreciate the effort you’ve gone to and love that extremely unique gift they receive.
  • If you can’t make something yourself, then buy handmade.  There are lots of local craft markets now,  and traders work really hard, not just producing their stock but standing in the cold waiting for YOU to come and buy.  There’s something for everyone from jewelry to artwork, photography, cards, calendars, ceramics…..  It’s also really good value too as few artisans actually charge by the hour.
  • If you only have time to shop online then buy from websites like Etsy or Folksy which allow you to buy handmade throughout the UK.  Many artists use ethical and recycled products and packaging.  My work is on sale at http://reflectionscoaching.co.uk/artists-shop.
  • Buying handmade supports local economy.  Local people use local web designers, milkmen, and suppliers.
  • Artist’s (myself included) are known for doing a happy little artist dance every time they make a sale.  Remember that’s putting food on someone’s table.  If you don’t believe me then make a purchase with me, ask nicely and I’ll show you my dance.
