My biggest daily challenge must be my ability to procrastinate.
Some people advise to tackle the big horrible jobs first, get them out of the way and carry on with your day -however this normally results in the postponement of the big horrible task and all those on my to do list below.
Others suggest doing lots of small quick win type tasks, great for motivation and clearing a to do list but at the end of the day that big task is still there.
My main distractions are social media. I ask myself whether I really need to see that photo of an old school friend’s 5YO boy with ice cream all over his mouth – it’s cute but only if you’re his mum. I search long and hard to find that interesting the post, you know the one that’s not to miss. Would it really matter if I missed it? Is it life changing? Probably not!
My other distraction at the moment is the sun. There is no where nicer at the moment than my garden, the warmth of the sun pleasant on my skin, something I love experiencing and often short lived. The only noise – jackdaws, sparrows, robins and blackbirds and the odd bumble bee buzzing. I can allow my mind to wander and ponder what life is about. Facebook can wait surely? Good time management will allow me to spend more me time in this way – but only if I don’t procrastinate…
I use lots of time management techniques including compartmental scheduling, mind mapping and action grids – these all help to manage the workload and allow me a more flexible work life balance. Having a portfolio career helps too.
