Sometimes I’m so focussed on producing a finished piece I forget to play. And by play I mean just stitching for stitching’s sake. Just putting some fabric in a hoop and allowing my needle and thread to carve out a design.

I think it is extremely important as an artist in whatever medium you work to achieve this mindful, carefree approach from time to time. The end result is more relaxed and a truer expression of the inner artist.

This is what I have in my hoop at the moment. I’ve used photos of lichen and moss to help me choose a few colours and the idea of circles and layers, which is loosly inspired by the layered rings that lichen forms on concrete and stones but that’s where my use of photos ends. I pick up this piece when I have nothing else to work on – or just want to work on something where deadlines and plans dont matter and I’m really liking the result – what do you think?

I should of course be planning for Leek Open Art Studios event on 7th May. So pop the date in your diary and come and visit me at Leek College to see how this piece is progressing.

Stitches used – couching, threaded back stitch, buttonhole, seed stitch, reverse applique.

Fabrics – offcuts from my dressmaking stash and scrap pieces from an old bed sheet .

Threads – DMC – 6 stranded cotton, and a random twisted thread fround in my stash.
