If you read last week’s blog then you’ll know I’m running a series of blogs about overcoming your fears of public speaking – if you missed it – it’s well worth popping back and reading it first.  This week I’m talking specifically about timing:

Almost every organiser has an agenda to run to and it’s a difficult job keeping a meeting running on time.  If you want to be hired as a speaker it is only manners to stick to your timing and you’re much more likely to be asked back as a result.

I spoke at an event recently and was one of two speakers.  My ten minute slot was later on the agenda and we sat and listened the the other speaker’s 30 minute presentation.  35 minutes in and I’d estimated 2 thirds of the way through their presentation the speaker was told for the second time to stop.

I wonder what impression the audience was left with?

So this week’s Top Tips are:

  • Remember the 5 P’s – poor planning = poor performance (yes we all know there’s a fifth!) – timing is key,  if you are given a time limit stick to it and the best way to do this is to rehearse it.
  • Set you mobile phone up in front of you and run the stopwatch  function – you will know if you’re running out of time or going to quickly and adjust your pace.
  • Leave time at the end for questions.  How much time, depends on the length of your presentation. I’d leave 5 minutes in a 30 min talk, 2 mins in 10 – this is just a guide – check with your hirer whether they have time for questions too.
  • Make your presentation flexible.  Are there sections where you can include more content or less vital bits you can leave out.  Agendas don’t always run on time and if you can help the chairperson make up lost time this really could get you hired again.
