I’ve talked previously about learning to say “No” and how important that is – particularly about putting yourself first, so why am I now telling you to say “Yes”?

Whilst not wanting to create any confusion, saying “No” is a very valuable exercise in self worth and time management and if you head over to my blog post, you can learn more about that, however there are times when “Yes” should be the first thing we say.

Picture yourself for a moment.  You boss has called you into his office and asks you to volunteer to do something new.  Taking on this responsibility will put you in front of other managers and is high profile and exactly the right thing for your career, yet you say “No”!!!

Or you’re happily tootling along running your own business and a valued customer asks you to do something you haven’t done before, you say “No” and suggest another supplier.

In both scenarios, that’s an opportunity lost.  And in some cases not just the opportunity but your business client may find a new supplier and take ALL his business there.  Your boss may not ask again.  Let an opportunity slip by and you may not get another one like it.  Can you really afford to let this happen?

What actually stops you saying “Yes”?

It’s your alter ego.  Sometimes known as Ike.  Either Ikan or Ikant, Ike is that little voice in your head telling what you can and can’t do against your better judgement.  What right has this little monster got to hold you back.  I sometimes feel Ike in the pit of my stomach feeling like butterflies he’s clearly jumping around in excitement down there feeding the negative self talk to my brain and stopping me seizing the moment.

“you don’t know how to do that” is his favourite phrase.

Time to talk back.  Time to tell Ike that you might not know how to do it right now but it will be easy enough to learn if you start with the stuff you do know.  Maybe its time to educate Ike that Ikan after all Ikant doesn’t exist does it?

It takes time, a skill that has to be learned.  It helped me set up my business and seize opportunities without which I would not be self employed, and I would not have done stand up comedy or tackled a zip wire.

Ikan, believe – take action.
