Do you dare to dream or does fear of failure stop you from doing so?
I’ve been doing a great deal of dreaming lately. Like many people, I sat down in January and worked out what my goals should be. Trouble is, a lot has happened since then. I’ve taken redundancy, had three months off, and am now coaching full time. Things have changed.
It would be so easy to just plod along for the rest of the year but I know my business focus has to change, I know my business needs a change of direction. So I sat down to figure it all out.
Coming from a corporate financial services background it would be so easy to stick to tried and testing goal setting techniques such as SMART. However it is one of those rare occasions in life when I am faced with a completely blank sheet of paper. How exciting!
I’ve also been fortunate to have had the opportunity to attend a couple of taster sessions with Robbie Birchall from Invent A Better Future. He uses a process based on Michael E Gerber and the E-Myth. Like coaching, its a process that helps open the mind to new opportunities, new ideas and dreams. And that’s where its starts – with the dream.
So just like I would with any client, I’ve taken my blank sheet of paper and that’s where I’ve started with my dreams. Its fantastic having a blank sheet, in fact a new notepad is even better. Make it large, use flip-chart paper, anything that gives you space to think, dream and grow your ideas. Using colour, making it visual, I’ve had clients use texture before, glitter and little felted shapes. Whatever makes the imagination flow. For others it might be spider diagrams, lists and action plans. The important bit is to start with the dream and allow those dreams to develop without stifling them or dismissing them.
I’ve used my dreams to create a dream/vision board. I’ve simply googled pictures that represent each of my dreams. They won’t mean anything to anyone else, but they each represent something to me. I’ve pasted these into an A4 word document so that I can print it off and put it somewhere where I will see it everyday. No matter what my day to day actions are, keeping a focus on my dream board will help me stay focused on what my longer term dreams are. I’ve also used Pinterest so if you want to you can see what they are.
I have more work to do to shape my business, but I hope you’ll follow my progress here at Reflections over the next few weeks/months.
I and my readers would love to hear what goal setting techniques work for you. Please comment and share below:

Hi Carolyn, What a great way to put your dreams and ideas down in a visual way. Haven’t thought of using Pinterest to do this – still in the dark ages of pictures and cuttings from magazines!
Good luck with maintaining the focus and making the dream a reality…and enjoy the journey
I do love doing this – its great to get clarity in this visual form – thanks for popping by
