I remember as a child enjoying colouring in – Doodle Art and Altair design were in fashion and I spent many hours much to my Mother’s Joy quietly sitting in the corner of the room with a pile of colourful felt tips, diligently working between the lines. I didn’t know it back then but it probably helped to add ‘attention to detail’ to my curriculum vitae much later in life.
I have rediscovered this joy recently. There has been a wealth of ‘mindfulness’ and ‘stress free’ adult colouring books come onto the market and I have discovered once again that ability to switch off from my hectic day to day life just to simply sit and colour quietly.
It requires patience, discipline and attention to detail, whilst encouraging my right side more creative brain. The ability to switch off completely, allows that simple act of being in the moment, the here and now and focus entirely on what I’m doing. And in that moment any stress just melts away.
Colouring may not be your thing, however there are a wealth of other activities to disengage the brain. Until now mine has been to get out into the fresh air and walk my troubles away – or to get rid of frustration in the gym. Some of you will ease away your troubles by immersing yourself into music, or playing team sports. It really doesn’t matter. What matters is to rediscover the child hood innocence, and the ability to switch off completely, allowing yourself detachment from the day to day routine and stresses of life.
