A little place called Whaley Bridge and its residents are on my mind at the moment.  I’ve followed the story since news first broke of the potential breach in the Toddbrook Dam and the risk of lives to anyone in the village.  I live about 40 minutes drive away.  It was around this time last year that I felt similar compassion when a large area of moorland on The Roaches was ablaze, much closer to home.

The residents of Whaley Bridge had little time to pack before vacating their homes and I’ve found myself musing about what I would have grabbed first from the house.  Priority would have been to grab my beloved dogs, then my laptop, camera and phone which are a huge part of my livelihood,  then a change of clothes seems common sense; as does the car keys!  Most things are replaceable, but what we’re left considering are those precious things representing memories.   Perhaps a piece of jewelry or a photograph.

It will be different for everyone, but it feels necessary at this time to think about what’s important right now.  Most of the “stuff” we possess is exactly that, just stuff and I think that I need to learn to let go a little.  And it is exactly the same for our thought processes.  How many useless or negative thoughts go through our heads in a day, whether it is about that person who pulled out of a junction in front of you, or your partner who failed to wash up this morning?  Maybe it’s time to let go and focus on what really matters.
