Trembling, dry throat, heart beating like a bass drum in your chest! Temporary Amnesia, wanting to walk out. Inferiority complex. The audience knows it all already – self doubt. I have experienced them all, maybe at different times, but yes all of them before speaking in front of a group or audience.
It might be a team meeting at work, an interview, a presentation, you may even class yourself as a professional speaker or simply need to deliver a 60 second pitch at a networking meeting, it doesn’t matter because it’s still scares the hell out of you.
This blog post is the 1st in a series that looks at what really scares us about talking in front of a group and how we can start to overcome those fears, whether you’ve never spoken in front of a group before or whether you just want to get better there’s something here for you.
Part 1 is for people who are facing their first steps in group speaking.
- Pick a topic you are comfortable with, it’s easy to come across as an expert when you know the topic.
- Talk to local groups, – many charities including the WI, Round Table etc have regular speakers and limited budgets – they will often be happy to invite you to speak if you are not charging a fee will be happy guinea pigs.
- Preparation is key – prepare your presentation as far in advance as you can and practice practice practice. It can feel a bit repetitive at times but its worth it.
- Be authentic – be you, if you try to be someone you’re not this will show through and spoil your presentation, you can fine tune things later.
- Always always ask for feedback
