As I write this post we’re 2 weeks into the new year already, I know routine has started to take over, as has that last minute rush to get my tax self assessment done and my little notepad that was brand new on the 1st January containing all my goals for the year is on my desk under a pile of paperwork – it’s only natural that we start to lose focus mid January.
On top of this there’s often talk of Black Monday, that mid point Monday in January when all the credit card bills have arrived, the days are short, dull, damp and cold and our goals and resolutions become much harder to maintain. Many goals that we set require discipline especially health related ones and I know first hand what 2 weeks without chocolate feels like.
So what can we do to keep focused? Here’s my top 4 tips:
- Don’t be hard on yourself if you let things slip. Tell yourself you’re only human, forgive yourself and start again.
- Review what you’ve achieved so far and congratulate yourself. Crikey reward yourself if you want to, but try and choose a reward that isn’t counter productive to your goal – so no chocolate for me then.
- Give yourself some motivation – promise yourself a reward when you get to your goal – mine will of course be a bar of chocolate!!
- Make yourself accountable – go and tell someone what you’re doing, they’re almost guaranteed to provide encouragement too – and once you’ve told them you’ll feel you’ll have to achieve your goal or lose face.
Whatever it is, good luck and keep going – you are worth it.
