My final year of my Art Foundation Degree has just started it’s going to be a big big year. It takes up about a day and a half on campus and perhaps the same amount of time in chunks at home. I run my Creative Freedom business from home and of course have a home to run and a husband to support in his business too.
At times it’s frantic, at best it can be chaotic. Google time management and there’s a wealth of planning tools to use. I often find it’s the simplest tools that are the most effective.
So here are the three techniques you should always include in your planning:
Goals – It sounds obvious – but to be clear on priorities you need to have firm goals. I bang on about goals a lot and if you need some extra help take a look at some previous blog posts:
1 to 5 Year Plan – Nothing complicated – just all your goals and ideas set out in priority order with realistic timescales. This is not something to be a slave to – just a resource document that can be amended, added or even bits deleted as life changes. But you do need to refer to it regularly just to stay on track.
To Do Lists – Love ’em or hate ’em they’re invaluable for getting stuff done. They allow you to break your goals down into manageable chunks and the feeling of achievement when crossing items off is fabulous. I recommend an app called To Do Ist. I use the free version – it’s basic but does the job and allows you to prioritise, reschedule and break down into projects – great for portfolio careers like mine.
