One of the hardest lesson I have learned and to some extent still having to learn is that when feedback is given, it’s only one person’s opinion.
Yet how easy is it to allow that one piece of feedback to dictate how we think about ourselves for hours, days, even years in some circumstances because we take it to heart and assume that everyone else thinks the same way. But have you actually asked them?
One of my favourite techniques for getting balanced feedback is to do the 5×5 feedback exercise.
Pick 5 really trusted people and email them the following Q’s.
- What one word or phrase describes me best?
- What do you think is my greatest achievement?
- What do you value most about me?
- What one thing could I change for my own benefit?
- What do you believe to be my greatest strength?
The hardest bit of this is to believe the feedback that you get.
If you try this, I’d love to hear how you get on.
