Flexibility is a bit of a thing isn’t it? It seems employers demand this of us and life generally forces us to change our plans.
It’s the same with goals. We set goals and at that point there’s a feeling of them being fixed like stone, we focus on something concrete and we’re much more likely to suceed.
Yet there comes a time when we have to think flexibly, even where our dreams are concerned. Life throws curve-balls and sometimes its easier to run with them than dodge them.
At 25 I was heading somewhere in financial services – I was focussed on my dream job, a Golf GTi and a big house. At 40 I no longer wanted those ideals. My modest semi just out of town with the countryside on my doorstep and a Skoda estate which carries my dogs easily is a much better plan.
So why have I changed?
Partly because I wanted to. I grew tired of the longer than 9-5 office days, where someone else seems to own every part of you. I wanted self employment and the flexibility that went with it. The Skoda was the compromise, forced by my more limited budget – but I’m so much happier.
The downside, with a more limited budget, is that some of the travelling has been put on hold. But as I prepare to turn 50, I’m realising that life can change for anyone without warning and I no longer want to put off my plans. My perspective has changed and I’ve booked a dream holiday. The plastic has taken a hammering but somehow I will work out how to pay for it. I can feel a lot of car boots on the horizon.
So the lesson today:
Stay focused on your dreams, look for reasons why to do things rather than put them off.
Be prepared to compromise, but do it on your terms
Be grateful for what you have in life – I’m just off out to celebrate with my birthday with some beautiful friends. Simple pleasures.
