Can the ability to keep calm really help keep you in the game? I watched Iain Watter in the Great British Bake Off recently, an episode where he really did lose his cool. Whether you believe this lost him his place or not it’s interesting to explore the psychology behind it.
Iain Watter’s hot-headedness was enough to melt his already semi-freddo ice cream. No one will ever know if he would have stayed in the Great British Bake Off competition if he’d served a melted baked Alaska. Are you prepared to take the chance of throwing away your dreams, by not keeping your head when it matters?
Even if you’re not a GBBO fan, I’m sure you’ll have seen some og the headlines around this. Disgusted and distraught having found his ice cream removed from the freezer by another competitor, Iain decided to throw a strop, dump his ice cream and walk off the set and although he may not have realised it at the time, his chances of staying in the competition ended on the scrap heap too as the BBC judges ruled that if there was nothing to judge he had to go, whilst weaker competitors remained in for another week.
Have you ever become so annoyed that you lose your temper and make it difficult to achieve what you’re striving for? I know I have.
Here are my 3 top tips for staying cool and saving the day:
- Breathe. Deep breathing introduces much needed oxygen when you’re panicking. Count in and out. In for 7, and out for 11, expelling the carbon dioxide that is inhibiting your ability to think clearly.
- It’s a well used expression, but put your brain into gear before you take action. What are the consequences of your gut reaction? What is the outcome likely to be?
- Work out what your desired outcome is, then consider what steps you need to take to get you closer to it.
