We all have people in our lives that we know draw heavily on our resources, wear us down, and create a drain on our energy. Sometimes we put distance between us and that person, sometimes we just keep giving. But what happens when that person is YOU?
I believe “Imposter Syndrome” sits within us all. Impostor syndrome* (also known as impostor phenomenon or fraud syndrome) is a term coined in 1978 by clinical psychologists Dr. Pauline R. Clance and Suzanne A. Imes referring to high-achieving individuals marked by an inability to internalize their accomplishments and a persistent fear of being exposed as a ‘fraud’.
For many it manifests itself as that inner voice. You know the one I mean. It’s the one that keeps telling you that you’re not good enough. You got the promotion because there was no one better or because your boss was mistaken in thinking you had the skills you need. For me, it’s the one that tries to remind me that I know noting about being self employed. That’s right! Nothing! Despite managing to submit tax returns for 4 years and not rendering myself homeless because I haven’t been able to pay the mortgage. When you think rationally about it – it’s just a load of nonsense – and there’s the problem, rational thoughts – we prefer to listen to the rubbish in our heads.
So next time you hear yourself talking yourself down and feeling like you don’t belong. Grab a pen and paper (you know that’s my favourite action) and write a list of (or indeed doodle) reasons you do belong and why you were chosen for the job. It’s easier than you think.
