Hedgehogs are one of my favourite animals – it stems for cute, cuddly images from childhood books – just think abour Beatrice Potter and The Tale of Mrs Tiggywinkle that portrayed a rather cute washer-lady hedgehog. One of my favourites. The question is, do we want to replicate this prickly, waddling, slug eating creature?
My answer is “No” and not because of the prickly outer, but because of its tendency to roll up in a ball in the hope that its predators will go away. Does this help us. It may save poor Mrs Tiggywinkle from the fox, however its defenses often result in worse evils.
I suspect foxes and badgers are not much of a danger to your life, but what does make you want to curl up into a ball in the hope it goes away. Perhaps its a phone call you’re putting off? Maybe a difficult conversation? Either way its not going away is it? And how bad can it really be?
So in the modern world our natural defenses are not always what we need to see us through our dangers. So the next time you’re feeling scared to tackle something remember poor squished little Mrs Tiggywinkle and see where braving it out gets you instead.
