Are you stressed? I guess most of us would answer yes to that question and most of us would probably admit that our own stress is worse than what others are going through.

I was recently asked to run a mini workshop for a group of teachers and spent a day with the self declared under-paid and overworked.  I imagine most non-teachers would have a similar opinion to me that teachers are paid quite well actually and get more holidays than anyone I know.  And most teachers I know would argue they work hard for the money, and have to do a lot of work in their own time (don’t we all!)

What did I learn?

Not one person in the room complained about pay, working long hours.  Their stresses were caused by having a strong desire to do the best they could for their pupils with one hand tied behind their back.  Other problems sited were around fear of being managed or bullied out of their roles despite having previously exemplary records as a result of budget cuts.

The symptoms of stress ranged from individuals not wanting to face Monday morning, through to time off work and worse case scenario thoughts of suicide.

Stress if far ranging in its symptoms and its manifestation.  It is unique and terrifying for any sufferers and most of all it is REAL for its victims no matter how big or small the cause.

When working with my clients I prefer to manage the cause – this isn’t always possible and in those cases we must learn to manage the symptoms.  The one thing we must never do is ignore it.
