In 2010 I started my own business before taking redundancy 12 months later – I can’t believe that I will be celebrating 10 years so very soon.
I always new my business would be part time, I wanted the increased freedom and flexibility part time hours afforded me and its been great. Taking last minute holidays, leisurely morning dog walks and catch up over coffee and cake with friends have been some of the many advantages.
A recent change in personal circumstances and a shift in focus for me has lead me to return to employment two days a week. At first I resisted, was this really what I wanted to do? How could I manage the flexibility of my business and my free time? It took a little while longer to find the right role – but it was worth the wait. My new employers understand that I run my own business as well and whilst I have two days where I have to be in a workplace, the other 5 days of the week are mine to be flexible with.
There are some bits of the business I’ve scaled back, I’m not currently going into workplaces but this is balanced because I’m focusing on the bits that matter, my personal coaching clients and developing my art. Who knows I may even have time to develop some workshops next year?
It’s really all about how you look at stuff – perspective! – and I’m happier than I’ve been for a while. I’m centred and my life balanced.
